Partial Blocking and Associative Learning

چکیده

We are going to explain partial blocking as the result of diachronic processes based on what will be call associative learning. Especially, we argue that the task posed by partial blocking phenomena is to explain their emergence from unambiguous and fully expressive languages. This contrasts with approaches that presuppose underspecified semantic meanings or ineffability like Bi–OT and some Game Theoretic explanations. We introduce a formal framework based on learning, speaker’s preferences and pure semantics for describing diachronic strengthenings of meaning. Moreover, we show how the diachronic development of systems of semantically co–extensive forms can be described in terms of a complete system of diachronic laws.

Backward blocking of relevance-indicating cues: Evidence for locally Bayesian learning

The phenomenon in associative learning called ‘blocking’ has been a central target for theories that aim to explain learning and attention. The training phases of the blocking procedure, described in detail below, can be run in backward order, yet still produce the blocking effect (e.g., Shanks,1985; Dickinson and Burke,1996; Kruschke and Blair, 2000). Explaining forward and backward blocking, ...

Associative learning and memory duration of Trichogramma brassicae

Learning ability and memory duration are two inseparable factors which can increase theefficiency of a living organism during its lifetime. Trichgramma brassice Bezdenko (Hym.:Trichogrammatidae) is a biological control agent widely used against different pest species. This research was conducted to study the olfactory associative learning ability and memoryduration of T. brassicae under laborato...

Critical evidence for the prediction error theory in associative learning

In associative learning in mammals, it is widely accepted that the discrepancy, or error, between actual and predicted reward determines whether learning occurs. Complete evidence for the prediction error theory, however, has not been obtained in any learning systems: Prediction error theory stems from the finding of a blocking phenomenon, but blocking can also be accounted for by other theorie...

Asymmetries in cue competition in forward and backward blocking designs: Further evidence for causal model theory.

A hallmark feature of elemental associative learning theories is that multiple cues compete for associative strength when presented with an outcome. Cue competition effects have been observed in humans, both in forward and in backward blocking procedures (e.g., Shanks, 1985) and are often interpreted as evidence for an associative account of human causal learning (e.g., Shanks & Dickinson, 1987...

Eye gaze and individual differences consistent with learned attention in associative blocking and highlighting.

The associative learning effects called blocking and highlighting have previously been explained by covert learned attention, but evidence for learned attention has been indirect, via models of response choice. The present research reports results from eye tracking consistent with the attentional hypothesis: Gaze duration is diminished for blocked cues and augmented for highlighted cues. If deg...
